Specere, 2022

Specere is a video installation and media performance that explores the limits of embodiment and pushes the process of self-recognition to a breaking point. Embedded within the performance, the body existing in the virtual realm is free and detached. Its virtual image is transferred using a series of mirrors from one plane of appearance and meaning to another.

While exposing my naked body in front of the camera and using the chroma key, I transport it into the industrial context of the city, creating a juxtaposition of intimacy and exposure. I emphasize my vulnerability through ridiculous shifts in scale and context, and introduce a slight tone of humour whilst trying to confront myself.

The image of my body is brought back to the physical dimension by reflecting it on mirrors, which I place in the space during the performance, creating a conversation between my virtual image and my present body. This complex series of layers allows me to interact with the representation of my body until the piece is no longer about the body, but my relationship with its image, a dialogue mediated through the comprehension of corporeality, virtuality, and what it uncovers.
