Por si acaso se acaba el mundo todo el sol he de aprovechar, 2023

This is a multimedia installation consisting of solargraphs, maps, and video compilations that attempt to register and embody the sun. The project seeks to redefine the sun's role from personal, directional, and environmental perspectives, looking for a coping mechanism and a place to find solace in these times of hopelessness and chaos. It is an attempt to find a way to keep the sun within me.

Coming from Colombia, a tropical land where the sun is an ever-present life force, I faced a stark contrast when moving to Canada, where extended periods of darkness and cold prevail. This shift forced me to confront the impermanence of life and awakened a deep fear of losing the sun’s warmth and strength in my skin and soul. I found myself desperately holding on to the briefest sunlight, searching for a sense of place and identity in this cold, unfamiliar territory.

My first intuition was to follow my ancestors’ steps and frame the sun as the center of life, as a timekeeper, and as a prompt to defy established human constructs of time and productivity. The repeated use of circles and cycles in the installation illustrates how time and space are not linear or directional but cyclical, inspiring me to question how we might navigate our world differently through ancient solar practices. This installation attempts to find a way back to the sun, reimagining it as a compass that can guide us both directionally and holistically.

Embracing the sun also represents a longing for the "South" as an act of rebellion. It challenges the colonial hierarchy of cardinal points that is still so present in my country, indoctrinated to aspire to the “North” and the "American dream". Inspired by the cosmovision of Colombian and Canadian Indigenous cultures, I placed DYI solargraphs in conversation with compass coordinates, poems and maps that playfully challenge conventional directions, to question how we can create a new map that prioritizes nature and community over frontiers, using the sun as a primary guide.

The Sun’s trajectory is traced through four solargraphs, each aligned with a cardinal direction and displayed across the space. In front of the projection, four fabric circles, echoing the four seasons and the cycles of life, frame the sun captured in the videos. They hold its image, reflect its light, and ultimately let it slip away. This spatial arrangement invites viewers to wander, to weave between layers, and to discover their own path towards the sun.
